A common worry we hear: "If I save in an RDSP, will I lose my AISH?" In Alberta, the answer is reassuring.
RDSP savings are an exempt asset
AISH has a limit on non-exempt assets, but RDSPs are specifically exempt. Money in the plan — your contributions, grants, bonds and growth — isn't counted.
RDSP payments are exempt income
Disability Assistance Payments and Lifetime Disability Assistance Payments are not deducted from AISH benefits.
What about ADAP?
Alberta launched the Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP) in 2026. The Alberta government now lists RDSP savings as an exempt asset and RDSP payments as exempt income under ADAP, just as under AISH. Rules can change, so keep your RDSP statements and check with Alberta Supports if your situation is unusual.
What about federal benefits?
RDSP payments do not reduce federal income-tested benefits such as the GST/HST credit, OAS or GIS, because the taxable portion is excluded from the calculation of those benefits. Because rules differ by program, we recommend reviewing your specific benefits before your first withdrawal.
